The innovative W3+ Fair/Convention 2018 enjoys a successful fifth outing: Once again over 3000 visitors travelled to Wetzlar on 21 and 22 February to the optics, electronics and mechanics networking fair. Exhibitors and partners are clearly delighted – not least because of the numerous foreign guests in attendance. Once again the region of Central Hesse demonstrated its economic strength in the area of precision technologies.
Recruitment meetings, laser projects and international delegations
Over 300 technical school pupils and students visited this year’s fair. With talks, guided tours, and contacts to the industry, the event offered these potential new recruits a helpful insight in their own individual career opportunities. Companies harnessed the presence of this new talent for their own recruiting activities – the acquisition of new employees remains a central issue.
Again demonstrating its crowd-pulling ability, the ELI Beamlines Laser Project was presented by the similarly named event partner. The "world's most power laser” continues to seek like-minded organisations, able to jointly develop this ambitious project. Apart from the members of the Wetzlar Network, an invitation was also extended to other enterprises to be take part in the tender procedure.
International delegations from India, China and the USA were invited by Regionalmanagement Mittelhessen to a business matching initiative. Following a tour of the trade fair, the delegates had the opportunity to establish contact with Hesse-based enterprises – supported by Hesse Trade & Invest (HTAI).
Held on the afternoon of the first day, the get-together held at the invitation of the Dutch supplier network Brainport Industries, also gave exhibitors the chance to enter into discussion with one another. A good foretaste: Then came an invitation from the event organiser to enjoy the exhibitor evening event W3+ and Friends, with the opportunity to enjoy some superlative food from star chef, Heiko Antoniewicz. Prof. Paul Grimm from the Fulda University of Applied Sciences was one of the evening's guest speakers, enthralling his audience with HoloLens glasses.
Wetzlar Network and – new this year – the photonics consortium EPIC were the Gold Partners of the W3+ Fair/Convention 2018.
Expert insights and know how transfer
The programme of lectures and workshops also brought its own emphases. Over 50 industry specialists delivered the latest know-how in areas such as photonics, automotive applications, laser technology, innovation management, design and product development, DIN standards, Industry 4.0, and international business.
In this respect, high-profile speakers such as Andreas Kaufmann (Leica Camera), Scott Stegert (Continental), Michael Schulz (Class 5 Photonics), Fabian Etzold (Dioptic), Georg Korn (ELI Beamlines) as well as innovation manager Heino Hilbig clearly pinpointed the technologies necessary for the future, and described how the requisite innovation culture could be created to this end.
